Funding for our future- the fight for fairer fees!
by Ella Copeland. UMSA Education Officer
In the light of the pending fee rise (University of Kent £9,000, University of Greenwich £8,300 and Canterbury Christ Church £8,500) I believe, along with many other students, that the resources available on the Medway campus should be improved to reflect the value for money received from the ‘home’ campuses.
Things such as an alternative study space, a better gym, a performance area and a crèche are important to match the resources available at Greenwich and in Canterbury, along with better social areas and student union involvement.
I will petition the vice-chancellors of each university, hopefully with the help of the ‘home’ student unions and the support of students’ and UMSA exec, for a list of resources we call for, as voted for by all students on this campus, and provide them with an alternative- either make improvements to the resources available to us, or decrease the price of studying at the Medway campus.
I know that this is the right time to really push the campaign for change on the Medway campus, as the Universities’ will listen at a time when they are set to make such a large change to their fees system.
I have already gained the audience of local MP’s and can guarantee the support of the student magazine in publicising the campaign, I would really appreciate the collaboration of fellow students, whether they are willing to take this on as a shared campaign or if they would just like to offer input. If anyone else would be willing to co-operate with me on this it would make a great difference to the campaign’s chance of success.
To gather opinions and support to get this campaign started. Anyone interested in being involved please email ecopeland1991@gmail.com
Thanks! Ella Copeland (Education Officer for UMSA)
