Jobshop Information

UMSA Jobshop is run in partneship with Kent Union jobshop and is here to help students at the Universities at Medway find paid employment during their studies; the aim is to help alleviate financial hardship, whilst offering the opportunity to gain valuable work experience. With the introduction of tuition fees and the abolition of grants, students have come under growing pressure to meet at least some of the costs of their education. An increasingly competitive graduate employment market has also made it essential for students to gain practical experience and work-related skills while studying. Jobshop provides students with a one-stop service for part-time and temporary vacancies; it also addresses the recruitment needs of local business.

From a student's perspective, Jobshop looks very similar to a job centre; the boards in its dedicated office are adorned with cards detailing current vacancies and a team of staff are available to provide application details and other advice when necessary. Jobshop maintains a bank of information on issues such as employment rights, taxation, National Insurance, preparing CVs and attending interviews.

Further information for students is available here. Students about to enrol at the Universities at Medway campus who do not yet have a university e-mail account can contact Jobshop - with job reference numbers found here - to receive full employer contact details.

From a local employer's point of view, Jobshop offers services that are similar to those offered by a job centre and commercial recruitment agencies, but which differ from both. Jobshop can be used to advertise a vacancy to over 17,000 students or to fulfil more specific needs, with a range of other services offered. An advertisement can be emailed to 3,000 students within half an hour of initial contact. Further information for employers is available here.
