THERE was to be no fairytale ending for Brimscombe & Thrupp on Saturday as Weymouth showed their intent to ensure they weren’t FA Cup headline makers for the wrong reason with Chris Shephard opening the scoring after just three minutes writes Stuart Broom.
Weymouth 6 Brimscombe & Thrupp 0
FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round – att; 643
Although the visitors kept the lid on it for the next half hour, the Terras added two more goals before the interval to break the minnows chances of causing an upset, and set up a visit to National League North opponents Kidderminster Harriers in the 4th Qualifying Round.
Captain Stewart Yetton found his goal touch with a hat trick as Weymouth cruised through to victory. The Hellenic Premier Division side went into the game in poor form having lost five of their last six games, and their task was not made any easier as Weymouth struck almost from the whistle as Dan Smith found Shephard who beat his man before firing home from 12 yards.
The Lilywhites survived a series of raids on goal before Jack Smith showed how dangerous he could be, but could not finish. However, the chance was rare as Smith and Shephard both forced saves from keeper Lewis Skyers, before the latter had to be substituted 10 minutes before the interval having picked up an injury.
Substitute Jordan Copp had barely been on the field two minutes, when Weymouth doubled their advantage. Yetton was set up by Ben Thomson for an easy strike, and in first half added time they added a third with Thomson again involved. His blocked shot looped into the air and fell for Dean Evans to fire home. Terras stopper Dan Thomas finally had a save to make from a 30-yard effort, before he had to thank Stephane Zuber for clearing his lines after he lost his race to the ball with Lilywhites Ben Deakin.
The game came alive in the final minutes as Weymouth added three more. First Yetton headed home Smith’s cross, before completing his hat trick in style with a wonderful volley into the top corner after expertly controlling a long cross.
Sub Sam Jordan completed the goal feast in the last moments, rounding the keeper to send the visitors home to lick their wounds. The Terras, now unbeaten in four, return to Evo-stik Premier South action on Saturday with a trip to face fifth-placed Hitchin Town followed by the visit of Basingstoke Town next Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a hat-trick from Connor Jevon and a single from Billy Lowes saw Weymouth progress to round two of the League Challenge cup with a 4-0 win over Wimborne Town last night (Tuesday).
