THE new Weymouth & District Table Tennis League season opened last week with 11 matches across the three divisions.

In Division 1, last season’s runners-up Park District were soundly beaten 23-14 by a much improved Budmouth B. Will Jolliffe did not drop a leg, but the match of the night as Budmouth struck an early blow, was Jamie Blair against Ray Cody.

Budmouth C travelled to Shipton Gorge A and fought hard for a 19-19 draw, with Tom Lydford and Robin Prince both taking all nine points for the visitors.

Last year’s Division 2 champions Preston B started strongly against Springfield B, who were also promoted. They raced to a 12-3 lead before being pegged back, but eventually went on to win the match 19-16.

The other Budmouth team in the division, A, got off to a winning start with a 24-16 victory over Colliton X.

In Division 2, All Saints secured maximum points in a 30-6 win over Preston to get their season off to a great start, whilst Shipton Gorge B made the trip to Weymouth to play Pilgrims A and returned with a 22-12 victory. However it was Pilgrims’ Tim Scott who top scored on the night with the maximum nine points.

Promoted Shipton Gorge C fought out a close 22-20 win over Wyke D on Tuesday evening, with all but one of the singles matches going to four or five sets.

Springfield D sported two new players in Richard and Mike Wood and they helped the team to a 22-14 win over Pilgrim B in Division 3.

Two new girls made their league debuts for Budmouth E, but the experienced STEPS M team were too strong for them and ran out comfortable winners 24-9.

Preston D is an all ladies team and the first that Preston has entered in the league. Their first match ended in an 11-25 loss to Wyke C but they played really well with Lynda Clegg picking up victories over both David Wyatt and Paul Robson-Rowell.

The two new teams in the league based at the Wey Valley Tennis Centre (Wey Valley School and Wey Valley TC) needed a last leg doubles decider at seventeen all to separate the teams. At just 10 years old Jess Moggeridge made her league debut for TC and scored six points, before teaming up with Richard Lane for the crucial doubles match.
